President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on June 12 attend a special joint sitting of the National Assembly, where he is expected to confer national honours on select lawmakers.
The event, which forms part of this year’s Democracy Day celebration, will highlight over two decades of civilian rule since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. President Tinubu, who will serve as the special guest of honour, will deliver a keynote address during the session, which will also feature reflections from former legislative leaders.
Announcing the development, House of Representatives spokesperson Akin Rotimi Jr. said the ceremony is themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.” According to him, the gathering not only celebrates democratic endurance but also reinforces the legislature’s central role in promoting good governance and accountability.
The national honours to be conferred are expected to recognise legislators who have made notable contributions to Nigeria’s democratic progress.
