Environmental Health Council in Limbo as Over 1,500 Workers Go Unpaid

Nigeria’s Environmental Health Council is facing a major funding crisis, leaving more than 1,500 staff without salaries for nearly two years.

The problem started after the federal government stopped funding certain agencies, expecting them to run independently. While some health-related councils were later granted funding, EHCON was left out, even though its work supports public health through sanitation, disease prevention, and environmental monitoring.

The situation has caused serious hardship for staff and raised concerns about the council’s ability to function. Officials are now urging President Tinubu to step in and approve funding, warning that continued neglect could affect national health and safety.
