The US government plans to reduce how long foreign students and international journalists can stay in the country.

Student visas would be limited to four years, while journalists would get a maximum of 240 days with one possible extension.

The Department of Homeland Security said the measure is designed to curb visa abuse.

“For too long, foreign students and other visa holders have remained in the U.S. virtually indefinitely. This poses security risks and financial burdens,” the agency stated.

But university leaders fear the move will harm education. Miriam Feldblum of the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration warned it could “disrupt studies and discourage international talent from coming to the U.S.”
